ATTN: Writers for MV Games (Past, Current, and Future)

Hello fellow writers,

My forum 'job' badge may say Designer, but I am primarily a Writer. Why did I start this thread? I started this thread to unite the writers of this community, and particularly of the RPG Maker MV users. We can share the challenges of being a writer, as part of a team, and also things we face daily as writers.

One of my friends has said, "Writers are the gods of their universes."

Here are things that writers often do.

1. They typically give much more longer answers than non-writers. Ever been called: wordy, verbose, over detailed, etc. ? We tend not to violate the minimum word count requirement for postings.

2. Have descriptive imaginations. We love to give details. Adjectives are our friends. We understand that some may not understand what what said in one sentence, so we will often word in a different manner in following sentence(s).

3. Love essay questions. Teachers and professors threatening us with essays questions if we have a make up test, actually makes us excited. It is not a deterrent but a reinforcer to want to take the make up. 250-500 word count projects are easy to do, and just get us warmed up. Often we have to find parts to trim down, if there is a maximum length.

4. Dream at will. We can enter a fantasy land very quickly, without prompting. Writers can even enter a fantasy land while talking to others.

5. Writers read. Those that write a lot tend to read a lot.

We are a vital part of game design. Writers are an important part of RPG Maker MV teams. We have so many ideas, yet are often the most misunderstood. I have seen in many groups, where writers have been laughed at, or even looked as, "Oh. Another writer." When writers unite, we can bring awesome growing universes and unite them.

What, as a writer have you faced, or would like to see, particularly with our game engine RPG Maker MV?

#1/#2 - I guess this depends. if it's something I'm really interested in, I tend to want to get others interested in it as well so I can talk about it non-stop. I think that goes for anyone who wants others to share their interests though! when it comes to stuff I love, I'm a huge chatterbox =)

lol #3 is so true. was awesome in class when teacher is like, Your exam this month is an essay! I'm cheering while everyone else groaned lol.

#4 awww yea! I love dreaming. though it's tough to do at-will lately with the stress of real life, I can still do it. It's so COOL when you create living characters/places in your mind and can go visit them!

#5 I don't really read much at all. to be honest, I rather dislike reading unless it is mythology-based or the story has a heavy focus on Dragons. unless you count playing video games (in which I prefer voice acted text) then this one doesn't apply to me =D (people often call me a liar when I say I dislike reading, as most people often clump the two together)

but as for picking up books, it's tough for me to find books that I actually want to read. however, when i DO find one I like, I tend to DEVOUR that thing very quickly haha.

as for your closing question.. I'm not sure. I haven't worked much with MV but I think creating a story--especially a story with gameplay--is far more enjoyable when you do it with someone else. seeing two ideas come together and make something new and exciting is something that I really enjoy. I only wish I had more people to write with...

I definitely can say that writing with others is one of my all-time favorite things to do! IF we can work together well, anyhow. some people tend to be very lazy writers and don't really care about what they write, or just choose to piggyback off of another person's idea rather than adding their own spice to the mix, so to speak.

so, I guess my answer for your question would be... finding suitable writing partners, in general, is very difficult.

I am working on a game with @Macro however and I feel that, as always, we are a yin and yang that creates a very interesting environment. we are different enough to keep things interesting, but similar enough that our ideas meld together very well.

You had so many wonderful points, but I will focus on this section. I have a VX Ace game that I am going to redo in MV, that I had over 10 writers, from around the world be participants in. I controlled the main character, a fairy, and they created a variety of different worlds and scenarios for her to be in. It is an awesome experience seeing all of the different writing styles, as well as incorporating their local culture into the game. Mutliple writers are fun. :)

Yeah I definitely agree. I try to meet other writers and befriend them but I notice that most are just...well, kind of uptight and difficult to deal with. Since I'm a pretty laid-back person, I dislike people who come off as extremely arrogant/pompous--I am not sure why almost every writer I've met has had this personality lol.

I have maybe two friends who like writing (not as a passion, just for fun) and they look up to me as sort of their senior I guess, and it's fun writing with them because they are always so excited when we write together. They always say they are improving just by writing with me, and I like to give them encouragement and point out how great they are doing. =)

I think a lot of writers (at least the ones I tend to meet) tend to place themselves and their writing above others and they just get so close-minded and boring. =( People who have just started writing are usually much nicer and easygoing...but I notice they can be very hard on themselves, thinking their writing is no good simply because of grammar mistakes or not knowing how to write "good" dialogue and descriptions...

I always try to tell people that writing is not about grammar or spelling or all that technical stuff, but what's inside... the heart and soul of your writing--your IDEAS! THAT is what makes a writer who they are! without ideas, words never become any more than scrawling on a piece of paper/computer screen... it's the ideas that make writing so fantastic.

having fun with what you write is also super important... i notice people who write for popularity lose that heart and their writing just becomes bland and uninteresting--it's really sad to see when people lose hold of their writing "Soul"

too many people forget to have fun and just use your imagination! writing is just another way of playing and expressing yourself... and it's AWESOME!
