Do you desire an entire game with nothing but black and white images, or maybe you want a game that is color for some parts, and desire dark images elsewhere (night time, dark caves, etc.).
Some people convert there images to greyscale, I prefer going beyond that, I prefer to assign the lowest hue, lightness, and saturation.
I will be explaining this tutorial using GIMP.
I actually did not know how to do grey scale, until I accidentally found it AFTER making the darker RTP images. The following examples will not include any RTP, but the steps are the same.
Here is how to make your image greyscale:
Select Image, then Mode, and then Greyscale.
Results:
Now we will look at making DARKER B&W RETRO effects:
This time Select Colors and Select Hue-Saturation
The next Spoiler shows what is equivalent to greyscale, we slide hue and saturation to their lowest values.
But, NO, we want it DARKER!
To achieve this adjust all three: hue, lightness, and saturation to their lowest values (slide to the left).
What I recommend doing is to work with the original graphics, RTP or not, and then replace them with the RETRO images, after knowing where everything goes. Always, ALWAYS, keep the originals. Maybe put them in a separate folder, but never delete originals.
