A Wize Guide: Summarizing a Story

Greetings.

The meaning of this thread is to share with you ways that I believe will help you summarize your story in an effective manner. I'll make it into a hyphened list.

-Keep it short. There are thousands of games on the market & people play lots of games! Sooner or later your story is going to sound familiar! (Unless you've written some really abstract material!) But, don't worry. That's not the problem. The problem is your summary is too long! Remember: It's a summary, Not a novel. If you want someone to try your new recipe do you give them an entire plate? No. You just give them a spoonful and let them decide if they want more.

-The good bits. Cram as much material into the summary as you can without giving away the spins, twists, bells & whistles.

-Your opinion, your comments. Exclude those. Just give them the material. You're not apart of the story. You're the story-teller. You're the author. You're the creator. Don't involve you, just tell the story. If you want to talk about your story and your game, release a developer's edition.

-Beginning, middle, end. Pretty simple, eh? There's alot more to story-writing-- but to be honest that pretty much sums it up. See how I wrote a summary of story-writing? You might discover some secrets or details about story-writing... but I drew you in.

-Locations, people, events. "During the Taratarian War, General Vesqa and his imperial army won the battle at The Mythra Gate." One sentence and I referenced an event, a location, and a person. Don't do this too much in your summary. Whoever is reading your story summary doesn't know anything about these people or these events. You're making a game. Attach these people, events, and locations to your exciting gameplay. This way the story elements will make their mark. Your fans: "Remember when General Vesqa betrayed The Red Lady and took over the Imperial Army? He won the war and a new seat of power simultaneously!" Ah, but you didn't mention in your summary that General Vesqa betrayed The Red Lady, did you? They won't forget General Vesqa for his act of treachery.

-2 to 5. Keep your paragraphs within that range if you're writing a summary.

That concludes my guide to summarizing your story! Apply these tips to your story and I think you will be happy with the results!
