I'm the type that always gets ideas and may go a liiiiiittle overboard so I decided to start a post with a bit of the direction I'm taking my game. First off the game is based around crafting, but instead of a perpetual crafting game like Stardew Valley, Minecraft and such I want it to be crafting with a story, changing the world threw hard work. Since I am a writer things kinda blew up from there.
The start of the game is rather simple. There is a gem that protects the city, and on the day dedicated to it the crystal shattered and released monsters all over the world destroying the city. The inspiration for me to make the game was a video called "Every JRPG ever" from college humor so I wanted to keep the generic opening, but the first change is while a Hero does respond and accept the call of duty the playable character freaks out, gets depressed at the destruction of their home and is worried about how they are going to live.
I love writing stories but since this is meant for crafting the player will only find out about the world if they want to threw talking to people or by building and filling the library, basically immersion vs cutscenes.
The start of the world is the world was born in darkness. Living shadows roamed the world and all was dead. With the strange power of the four kings four kingdoms were given life and they started growing. There was the King of Power, the King of Protection, the King of Time, and the King of Civilization, and when there were enough humans under their rule they were able to use their power to convert the shadows into living beings, beings the humans labeled as monsters. Free to roam the "Dead Lands" safely without the shadows attacking them and stealing their lives the humans were able to search for resources and other signs of civilization in which humans started finding magical crystals, each one containing different types of energy, some that produced water from thin air, ones that made plants grow in even the most unfertilized soil, and even ones that healed people from death's doorstep. The humans started searching for these crystals and building even further, but, because they were stronger and naturally had strange powers Monsters were quickly able to take over. Out of fear the humans rejected the monsters and attacked, and when pushed into a corner the monsters fought back leading most humans to become enslaved. A group of merchants were able to get away and built a sanctuary protected by trees they called New Hope, and with the hard work of everyone they were able to make it a trading capitol. While digging out a lake area within the river they discovered a huge crystal with an unknown energy. The people dug it up, polished, cut it up and enchanted it and it became a crystal able to give life to everything around it, pure water, better soil, cleaner air, and healing energy, but when a greedy monster attacked the city and tried stealing the crystal a spellcrafter enchanted the crystal to trap monsters within it, to use the monster's energy to provide power to the rest of the city. Monsters were hunted and fed to the crystal as that was "What they deserve" and the humans were finally able to live in peace.
On top of that there are some other lore things that affect the game. There are two types of magic a human can have, Natural and Earned. Earned Magic is what every mage has. It requires study, and once the basics are learned anyone with signification spirit energy and spiritual compatibility can use it simply by reading over the research. It was discovered as a way for humans to equal Monsters by studying them, but after the monsters were sealed very few Spellcrafters remain due to how hard it became to learn without knowledge gained from the monsters they studied, the other is Natural magic, powers that are discovered without any study as a symbol of devotion, for example a Priest in a typical RPG uses natural magic as only those with a devoted belief in their god or goddess can posses the power of life and death within their hands, or the type of magic a hunter may possess when suddenly they can see in the darkest nights. The magic crystals are very prized and are rare to find in populated areas, especially since it can grant people powers, can benefit cities, or even force others into servitude. Some people are so desperate for the crystals they are willing to give ANYTHING to possess them, which works for the player's character as they need money and supplies to rebuild their home (Or maybe the player wants power and influence to destroy their foes. There are monsters out there) And last, every story has more than one side. EVERY....STORY! Though the people that grew up in a time of death are long gone their stories remain and everyone's choices affect the world in some way. Those that seek the truth will probably find more than those that accept the reality.
Sorry for the long post. Needed to take a nice long break. designing the gathering system is rather irritating sometimes. Hahah
