When would you promote your game prior to putting it up on a funding site?

If you were going to use a site like IndieGoGo, Kickstarter, etc. When would you promote your game prior to doing so? Obviously you need a following before you put it up there to increase funds, views, hype, etc. But when do you feel would be the best time to do so? A month out, 2 months, etc. If you do it too soon someone could steal your idea, if you do it too late you won't get enough people to possible fund the campaign.

Most successful crowdfunding campaigns have their first ten donors already in the pocket. A video of simple gameplay is available, which select screenshots. Some successful campaigns have started the crowdfunding with actually very little of the game finished. Most of the campaigns that I financially supported had a little over five minutes of game time finished. It is indeed to have a following built prior to even thinking of having a crowdfunding campaign. Taking a month or so to give your inner core group hints and advanced viewings helps a lot. Getting that first 25% funded fast is extremely important. The more people you have aware of the project's campaign will help a lot. The more funders you have ready, at the moment that the campaign goes live, helps a lot. You are wanting to get a lot of funding immediately to get better momentum. If one waits a long time between announcing the campaign and actually starting the campaign, the potential supporters may get bored of waiting. To directly answer your question, I think waiting longer than a month to give notice is too long.
