Avoid making things too busy or plain; there needs to be a balance. Also, avoid gigantic maps if you're not ready for it. (And if you question yourself, then chances are you're not ready!)

@sage that's probably the best advice I've ever seen. "Don't stop drawing when you have art block and keep pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone." Far too many people I know don't do this and they wonder why they never improve.
